Upper Sand Mountain Parish Information
Almost thirtyfive years ago, a group of visionaries from small membership rural congregations clustered atop the foothills of Appalachian Sand Mountain came together to seek God's guidance as they explored new possibilities for mission and ministry together. They looked for better ways to strengthen the ministries of local congregations and for nurturing members. They committed themselves to extending outreach ministries of love and compassion to Upper Sand Mountain Area families and to the world beyond. Churches made a covenant together to become a "family of churches" - the UPPER SAND MOUNTAIN PARISH.

The birthing process was at times painful; growth has not always been easy; adolescence was challenging and maturity is not unflawed. Yet, the marvelous part of it all has been an ongoing sense of God's presence and call. Many of the things that have been accomplished have far exceeded the highest expectations of those early visionaries. Ministry has been process and movement more than program and maintenance. Congregations have been open to change and transformation with creative and committed lay and pastoral leadership.

God continues to stir among the people and to visit with congregations. Lives are being changed; the gospel is being proclaimed in word and deed; the poor and neglected have bags of food and voices calling for justice; children are once again present and singing in old churches; lay speakers are studying scripture and witnessing to god's saving grace in the midst of congregations; partners from across the United Methodist Connection are sharing volunteers and resources…God's kingdom is breaking into the world on Sand Mountain. The parish cooperative family has become a "better way" of being in ministry.
