In the fall of 2000, the parish converted the bathroom into it's first storm safe room in a "Better Way" house. The room is constructed with polysteel forms reinforced with one-half inch steel and filled with 8 inches of concrete. An 18-guage steel door and casin is secured with three deadbolt locks. The Sand Mountasin Parish is a high-risk wind zone. As in the case of it's solar innovations, the parish will model this new "safer home" technology for the area. Community construction workshops have been conducted using two different construction techniques. The masonry floor, walls and roof of the "safe room" will be constructed before the construction team arrives.
